Pruning is a practice involving the selective removal of certain parts of a plant, often the branches, buds or even roots. Pruning is done in order to remove parts of the plant that may be diseased, damaged, or unstable. Pruning is frequently performed on small branches instead of larger ones to make them less susceptible to decay. Preferably pruning should be performed on younger plants because of this.
It is very important when pruning that the tree’s limbs are kept intact, as this is what helps the tree stay upright. Hedges, by design, are usually (but not exclusively) maintained by hedge trimming, rather than by pruning.
