There are two main types of trees, deciduous and evergreen. Each type has their own unique characteristics and behaviors.
Deciduous trees will naturally shed all of their leaves, fruit, seeds, or flowers during a certain period of time each year. This process is known as abscission and the period of time when it occurs significantly varies depending on the climate. In polar climates deciduous trees tend to shed during the winter whereas in more arid regions deciduous trees will shed during the dry season or occasionally other seasons depending on rainfall.
Unlike deciduous trees, evergreen trees retain their foliage for multiple growing seasons. Some evergreen trees even have the potential to retain their leaves for several decades! it should be known that evergreen trees will not retain their leaves forever, instead they will gradually lose them. Generally evergreen trees have thicker leaves but a lower rate of photosynthesis which results in slower growth.
